The bee and The flower

Emma Rose came for a special class yesterday - she is waiting for her school building to be ready.

She came prepared with prints of pictures she had taken while playing in her backyard with simple things - rocks, mulch, leaves, flowers.  Then a bee came and the story became about the bee.  We used a few pictures to make a picture book.  I loved it that she came prepared and knew that she wanted to make a book.

After lunch we made another book - all the pictures she had taken gave me the idea of making a flip book.  And I wanted her to draw spontaneously.  I drew with her and it was really fun to share the creative energy and make a fun story called 'The flower'.

Tunnel book at library

The Kensington library in San Diego is a great place for me to do book arts workshops. Lynne, the librarian invites me every month and on the day of the workshop she calls people to remind them. Everyone is always enthusiastic and ready to create.

Here are some tunnel books from last night - sorry I did not get pictures for every one of them.  They were all unique and so lovely.

Making things camp - day 2

We painted wooden pieces and made robot dolls.  Used wood, wood glue, acrylic paints, wire, beads, pipe cleaners and sharpies to make these robots come to life. 2 little boys joined us for this project.

After lunch, the girls and I made books and talked about who to dedicate the books to :)

Two small notebooks to write in

Recycled journal

We made a recycled journal yesterday with 3 women.  Cutting brown paper bags can be meditative - try it sometime. We cut, sewed, glued, cut some more, trimmed, and sewed up a journal.  The pictures dont tell the whole story but it was a long fun process and hope these journals with fill up with creative out-pourings for all of them.

Novel Destinations

The Oceanside library invited me to do a book arts workshop with the theme Novel Destinations.  What a great topic!  The things you can put in a book regarding your travels, both internal and external.  The journey can be a destination.  We created a double accordion structure ready to be filled up with images, text, poems, observations.

Monica, my contact from the library is amazing at getting a great crowd. 

Here are some pictures from the workshop.  I am sorry I did not get one of all the participants and I hope they come back for the next workshop.

 

Birthday journals

A family in our neighbourhood invited me to make journals for a birthday celebration.  How exciting it was to meet and make together! 

I hope this will be a treasure for the girls to write and draw in.

Little dictionaries

We made dictionaries yesterday - 6 girls learned how to construct a long accordion and then they got right into filling the pages with the alphabet and drawings.  These are so neat to see in person - so special to see how kids learn language and what they pick up on. One of them even wrote words in Spanish.

My first dictionary

We made little dictionaries with paper and tabs and drawings.  Once the construction was done - which was a bit complex for these 5-7 year olds, they got right into drawing and writing the words.  For each page, we drew one item starting with that letter.

How we use water

We made small books about how we use water.  I was really proud of the girls for getting the concept of what we were trying to do.  Each came up with a bunch of personal drawings which were fun and meaningful. 

Making simple books is SO EASY.  Just gather some paper together, punch a couple of holes to hold the pages together.  We used fuzzy pipe cleaners.  Yarn works great as well. 

Here is a picture from each book with the author's name and the title they gave to the book.

Book arts at Oceanside library

The wonderful hosts at Oceanside City library organized for me to do 2 book arts workshops last Saturday.  One for children and the other for adults.  The turnout was great, and the enthusiasm contagious.  Kids and parents made a no-sew journal with an ocean theme and the adults made a sewn codex journal with a lovely soft cover. 

The books were simple and basic and it was nice to see people getting involved in making their book their own.

Thanks to all the librarians - Monica, Kim, CJ -  one more time for making my visit so very nice.
